  • Direct claims for individuals with a terminal medical condition

Individuals with a terminal medical condition (TMC) can now make a direct claim for their ATO-held entitlements in super guarantee (SG), superannuation holding account special account (SHAsa) or unclaimed super money (USM) accounts. This Treasury Laws amendment (2018 Measures No.1) received royal assent on 29 March 2018, and came into effect from 1 April 2018.

Individuals will no longer be required to transfer these entitlements to a nominated provider to receive a direct payment. This will help reduce the processing requirements for large super funds and other providers.

A direct application for payment of these entitlements will be available through a paper form. In future individuals will be able to claim using ATO Online.

Note: Former temporary residents must continue to make a Departing Australia Superannuation Claim via DASP Online or ATO Online.
