  • Highlights: SMSF quarterly statistical report June 2021

    Our Self-managed super fund quarterly statistical report – June 2021 is now available. It provides our latest statistics on the self-managed super fund (SMSF) sector. Highlights include:

    • There are 597,900 SMSFs.
    • There are 1,114,529 members of SMSFs.
    • The total estimated assets of SMSFs are just over $822 billion.
    • The top asset types held by SMSFs (by value) are    
      • listed shares (28% of total estimated SMSF assets)
      • cash and term deposits (18%). 
       
    • 53% of SMSF members are male and 47% are female
    • 86% of SMSF members are 45 years or older

    This report also provides an update of the annual SMSF population analysis tables for 2015-16 to 2019-20, based on SMSF annual return data. Highlights for 2019-20 include:

    • the average assets per SMSF member were $696,000
    • the average assets per SMSF were $1.3 million
    • member contributions into SMSFs were $12.6 billion
    • employer contributions into SMSFs were $5.4 billion
