Earlier this year we organised two live stream events to help funds understand the super changes that will come into effect from 1 July 2017.

Recordings (video) and transcripts of these events are now available for you to view anytime, with descriptions outlined below.

    Budget super changes

The first event, Budget super changes and what they meanExternal Link, was broadcast on 5 April. The session provided an overview of the super new measures announced in the May 2016 Budget, and focused on busting myths and answering common questions.

The event was hosted by the ATO's Carmel Rugolino, with a panel of superannuation experts covering topics such as:

    • introduction of a transfer balance cap of $1.6 million for pension-phase accounts
    • low income superannuation tax offset (LISTO)
    • improving the integrity of transition to retirement income streams (TRIS)
    • personal super contributions deduction
    • co-contributions
    • spouse tax offset.

    Industry Engagement Forum

The second event was our Industry Engagement Forum – SuperStream and Single Touch Payroll (STP)External Link, held at Sydney’s Luna Park on 6 April and hosted by Nicole Dykstra, ATO Assistant Commissioner – Super.

The forum was broken up into two parts. The morning session focused on the SuperStream roadmap. This included the next 12 months of delivery and details of future reporting requirements for funds.

    Among the topics covered were:

    • employer onboarding
    • rollover implementation and contributions
    • enabling services and the SuperStream standard
    • Business to Government (B2G) reporting.

The afternoon session focused on Single Touch Payroll design and readiness activities for 1 July 2017, including the small business pilot and delivery schedule to July 2018.

John Shepherd, ATO Assistant Commissioner – Single Touch Payroll, led the session, along with a panel of design experts. John has played an active role in the implementation of SuperStream, as well as leading the government’s Single Touch Payroll initiative for the last 12 months.
