  • Highlights: SMSF quarterly statistical report June 2020

    Our Self-managed super fund quarterly statistical report – June 2020 is now available. It provides our latest statistics on the self-managed super fund (SMSF) sector. Highlights include:

    • There are 593,375 SMSFs.
    • There are 1,107,268 members of SMSFs.
    • The total estimated assets of SMSFs are just over $733 billion.
    • The top asset types held by SMSFs (by value) are    
      • listed shares (26% of total estimated SMSF assets)
      • cash and term deposits (21%).
    • 53% of SMSF members are male and 47% are female
    • 86% of SMSF members are 45 years or older

    This report also provides an update of the annual SMSF population analysis tables for 2014-15 to 2018-19, based on SMSF annual return data. Highlights for 2018-19 include:

    • the average assets per SMSF member were $701,000 and median assets were $424,000
    • the average assets per SMSF were $1.3 million and median assets were $749,000
    • member contributions into SMSFs were $12.0 billion
    • employer contributions into SMSFs were $5.4 billion.
