  • Preparing to lodge your SAR – report your ABN

When completing your self-managed super fund (SMSF) annual return (SAR) make sure you report your SMSF's Australian business number (ABN). By including the ABN on the SAR, it allows our systems to match your members correctly. This ensures the account details for the SMSF are displayed for the member when they access ATO online services.

Your member is then able to choose their SMSF account if they are completing the following forms online:

    • compassionate release of super
    • first home super saver scheme
    • excess concessional contribution election
    • excess non-concessional contribution election
    • Division 293 election.

It also means that the member’s SMSF account details are visible on Online services for agents if your member uses a registered tax agent.

If your fund does not have an ABN, you can apply for one online at the Australian Business RegisterExternal Link.

If your SMSF previously held an ABN and it was cancelled in error, phone us on 13 10 20 if you want it reinstated.
