  • Claiming deductions for rental properties?

We are still receiving tax returns from some tax agents where travel to residential rental properties has been incorrectly included. Remember, from 1 July 2017 your clients can no longer claim travel expenses related to inspecting, maintaining or collecting rent for a residential rental property, unless they are an excluded entity.

If we have already processed your client's return and it included incorrect rental property travel claims, you will need to lodge an amendment.

To help you and your clients get rental property claims right we have a range of guidance products available on our website at ato.gov.au/rental They include a suite of rental property videos and a fact sheet titled Top 10 tips to help rental property owners avoid common tax mistakes.

Check your clients' tax returns before lodging to avoid processing delays and unnecessary contact from us.
