  • Inactive ABNs to be cancelled

From October 2019, we will focus more on our bulk Australian business number (ABN) cancellation program. This program helps to ensure the integrity of the Australian Business Register (ABR).

We aim to cancel ABNs for businesses we are confident are no longer carrying on an enterprise. To help us determine if ABNs are inactive we look for indicators the business no longer operates, by checking:

    • information in the ABN holder’s tax return and other lodgments
    • if the ABN holder's lodgments are outstanding
    • third party information.

If we mistakenly cancel your client's ABN based on available information, or cancel their ABN and later they want to start a business again, your client:

    • can reapply for the same ABN, if their business structure remains the same
    • will be issued with a new ABN if their business structure is different, for example if they were a sole trader but the new business is a company.
