  • Strike against suspected phoenix activity and tax avoidance

Last week we undertook a coordinated strike on tax agents suspected of facilitating phoenix activity and promoting tax avoidance involving GST, income tax and the failure to remit pay-as-you-go withholding tax payments. We accessed 11 business and residential sites in Melbourne and Shepparton without notice, targeting a group of tax agents.

The agents were targeted after long-term compliance action following tip offs from the tax profession and clients. Our compliance action and assessment revealed an immediate concern to the community, a serious threat to the integrity of the tax and super systems and the agents’ clients.

We acknowledge that the majority of agents do the right thing and thought carefully about taking such firm action. On this occasion, it was necessary due to the immediate risk and magnitude of the allegations. Working with the tax profession is key to helping preserve community trust and confidence in the tax and superannuation system. It also reinforces our commitment to a level playing field, in support of honest agents who do the right thing.
