Programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Programs designed to provide paid on-the-job training, and receive certified qualifications.

Last updated 7 December 2021

One of our greatest assets is the diversity of our people and the different experiences and perspectives they bring to the organisation. Our employees represent the diversity of the Australian community and we strive to be a lead agency for Indigenous employment.

Our development programs

Our Evergreen and Jumpstart Indigenous programs are development programs exclusive to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

These programs provide candidates with regular on-the-job training and an opportunity to complete a certified course while doing paid work.

  • Evergreen program – is an ongoing role where candidates complete a formal qualification as part of their program. Participants have an opportunity for promotion to a higher salary on completion of the program.
  • Jumpstart program – is a 12-month non-ongoing role and provides flexibility to experience working at the ATO while completing a formal qualification. On completion of the program, participants have the option to apply for other career opportunities in the ATO including the Evergreen program.

Improving employment opportunities

We recognise the importance of recruiting and retaining Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. We have implemented our Reconciliation Action Plan and 2024 Diversity and Inclusion Strategy to improve the representation and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ATO.

The ATO Evergreen Program provides work experience, formal training and a permanent job on completion.
