SMSF average assets
Over the five years to 30 June 2012, the average assets of SMSFs grew to $929,000. This represents a growth of 9% over the period, which is similar to the rate of growth of SMSF member average balances (see appendix 1, table 12). The median SMSF asset size was $518,000, an increase of 7% over the period.
The difference between the average and median asset figures reflects the number of SMSFs with over $1 million in assets. These have increased from 26% in 2008 to 28% in 2012 (see appendix 1, table 14).
As mentioned previously in relation to the growth in SMSF member balances, the trend of average and median SMSF assets over the five-year period reflects economic conditions.
This is further demonstrated by analysis of the average and median asset balance of SMSFs established in each of the five years to 2012. Average assets of SMSFs established in 2008 were $334,000 compared with $332,000 for those established in 2012, a decrease of 0.5%. The median assets of SMSFs established in 2008 and 2012 were $198,000 and $202,000 respectively, an increase of 2% (see appendix 1, table 13).
