Data obtained from the ABS is based on apparent consumption of alcohol (from excise, import and sales data). However, this does not measure actual consumption, as it does not account for factors such as waste or storage.
All alcohol available for consumption in any particular year is assumed to have been consumed in that year.
No adjustments have been made in the data for duty-free alcohol imported to Australia by individual overseas travellers.
Similarly, no adjustment has been made for alcohol imported to Australia, cleared through a bonded warehouse and then subsequently re-exported.
There is some circularity between our dataset on beer clearances and ABS apparent consumption of alcohol data.
