    Saving paper for myGov users

    If you're an individual or sole trader and you have a myGov account linked to the ATO, the way you receive your activity statements or instalment notices has changed.

    If you previously received paper, all of your activity statements or instalment notices will now be delivered electronically. We will no longer send you a paper activity statement or instalment notice.

    When your activity statement or instalment notice is ready, we'll send a message to your myGov Inbox. To lodge or pay, simply click the link in the message to go to our online services for individuals and sole traders.

    What if I don't need to lodge?

    If you have nothing to report at any label, you need to lodge a 'nil' activity statement. You can do this using our online services or by phoning 13 72 26 (this automated service runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week).

    If you no longer need to lodge activity statements, you need to cancel the relevant registration.

    If you no longer need to pay instalments, you can exit the PAYG instalments system through our online services for individuals and sole traders.

    What if I have a tax agent or BAS agent?

    If you have a tax agent or BAS agent, they will still be able to lodge, vary, revise and pay on your behalf through their preferred electronic channel.

    Tax agents can view messages we send to your myGov Inbox when searching via the Client correspondence list.

    BAS agents will receive an email when an activity statement or instalment notification is sent to your myGov Inbox.

    Paper activity statements to stop for electronic lodgers

    Since 1 July 2014, if you or your registered agent lodges your activity statement via the Business Portal, Standard Business Reporting (SBR), electronic commerce interface (ECI), electronic lodgment service (ELS), the Tax Agent Portal or the BAS Agent Portal, we'll no longer send you paper activity statements. Instead, your activity statements will be available electronically.

    For example, if you lodge via the Business Portal, Standard Business Reporting (SBR) or electronic commerce interface (ECI), we'll send an email to your nominated email address advising when your next activity statement is available online.

    When your email address is not recorded or is incorrect, we can't send an email notification. You can check whether your email address is up to date via the Business Portal. You can also set reminders to lodge and pay.

    If you lodge via a registered agent

    If you use a registered agent to lodge your activity statement, they may lodge it via an electronic channel. We encourage you to discuss this with your agent the next time you make contact to determine how to manage your activity statement obligations for the future.

    Viewing your activity statement

    If a registered agent manages the lodgment of your activity statement, you may still want to access your activity statement. You can do this on the Business Portal or by using our online services for individuals and sole traders (you will need a myGov account linked to the ATO).

    The Business Portal and our online services allow you to:

    • view, lodge and revise activity statements
    • view payment options
    • obtain an electronic funds transfer (EFT) code
    • obtain a payment slip or receipt.

    We'll continue to send paper activity statements for the following form types when we can't send them electronically:

    • Annual GST report – form Q
    • Quarterly PAYG instalment notice – form R
    • Quarterly GST instalment notice – form S
    • Quarterly GST and PAYG instalment notice – form T.

    Options to remind you of your obligations

    We understand that paper activity statements are sometimes used as a reminder to prepare, lodge and pay, or make an appointment with a registered agent.

    There are a number of reminders you can use to help you manage without paper statements:

    • download key dates and reminders to your computer or mobile device calendar through the Small business newsroom or ATO app
    • bookmark the activity statement generate dates and lodgment due dates
    • develop internal spreadsheets with dates for your activity statement lodgment and payment due dates
    • use the receipt of statements from your financial institution to help you plan when activity statements are due.
