Reasons for varying the amount withheld

This information may not apply to the current year. Check the content carefully to ensure it is applicable to your circumstances.

End of attention

The rates of withholding provided in the tax tables attempt to approximate a payee's end-of-year tax liability. However, because each payee's circumstances are different, some payees may find that the amount withheld using the tax tables is either too much or too little when compared to their actual end-of-year tax liability.

Your payee may want to vary the rate of withholding so that they do not either:

  • have too much tax withheld, or
  • receive a large tax bill at the end of the year.

Payees can request an increase or decrease in the rate or amount of withholding.
