  • Update your name

    There are a number of ways you can update your name:

    Online

    The quickest way to update your name is by using our online services for individuals. You need a myGovExternal Link account linked to the ATO and at least one of the following identity documents to make the change:

    • Australian full birth certificate – not an extract
    • Australian marriage certificate
    • Australian change of name certificate.

    The document details you provide will be verified with the agency that issued the document.

    How to update your name online

    To update your name online:

    • sign in to your myGov account and choose the ATO member service to take you to the ATO online home page
    • from the top menu, select My profile > Personal details
    • select Update name and title from below your name
    • select the identity document that you will be using to verify your name change
    • tick the box to agree to your identity document being checked with the issuing agency then select next
    • complete the fields provided for the identity document selected then select verify.

    By phone

    We can update your name over the phone if you have the right documents to make the change. Just phone us to speak to a customer service representative.

    You’ll need at least one of the following identity documents that can be checked over the phone:

    • Australian full birth certificate – not an extract
    • Australian marriage certificate
    • Australian change of name certificate.

    We'll check your documents with the agencies that issued them. If we can't make the changes over the phone, we'll give you other options.

    Next step:

    By post

    Download and fill out the form Change of details for individuals and post to the address on the form with a certified copy of your original identity document. Documents you mail to us may not be returned to you – so don't post original documents.

    These documents must not be changed in any way. It can take up to 28 days to update your records after we receive the form.

    Foreign residents

    Foreign residents who don't have an Australian identity document can supply a certified copy of one of the following:        

    • foreign passport
    • foreign birth certificate
    • national photo identification card
    • foreign government-issued identification
    • foreign marriage certificate
    • foreign driver licence.
