The ATO will take responsibility from the Department of Human Services (DHS) for administering early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds from 1 July 2018.
The Governor-General yesterday signed theTreasury Laws Amendment (Release of Superannuation on Compassionate Grounds) Regulations 2018 and theTreasury Laws Amendment (2018 Measures No. 1) Commencement Proclamation 2018 after theTreasury Laws Amendment (2018 Measures No. 1) Act 2018received Royal Assent on 29 March 2018.

Your members will continue to apply for early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds via the DHS portal until 30 June.
From 1 July individuals must apply through the ATO via our website. We’ll let you know when the ATO application portal is live so you can update your call centre scripts and direct members to the new application portal.
After 30 June, DHS will continue to process applications they receive up to and including to 30 June. In this period after 30 June your members will continue to provide you with copies of DHS approvals. We'll tell you when DHS have processed all their pre-30 June applications and you shouldn't receive any DHS approvals thereafter.
From 1 July, when we approve an application we'll send you an electronic copy of the approval notice via the Bulk Data Exchange (BDE) service.
