SMSF members by balance
At 30 June 2012, the average SMSF member balance was $487,000 (see appendix 1, table 12), which was approximately 16 times the size of the average account balance of non-SMSF members of $30,000 28. The median SMSF member balance was $292,000.
Graph 9 shows that over the five years to 30 June 2012, average and median SMSF member account balances grew by 8% and 9% respectively. The trend generally follows the economic outlook at the time, falling in 2009 followed by a steady increase to 2011 in line with improved confidence. There was a marginal decrease in average SMSF member balance from 2011 to 2012.

The same trend applied to the opening member balances of SMSFs established in each of the five years 2008 to 2012 (see appendix 1, table 13).
Graph 10 shows that, after falling in 2009, the average opening member balance for funds established in both 2010 and 2011 steadily increased, while a marginal drop occurred for those established in 2012.
The average opening member balance reported by funds established in 2012 was $186,000, a decrease of 4% over the five years to 2012. However the median opening member balance of $95,000 grew by 9% during the period.
On average, 52% of member opening balances were between $1 and $200,000, while 26% had a $0 balance in the year of establishment.29
