    The SME market segment research was first conducted in May 2008. Since then, there have been a range of issues, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), that have impacted on the SME segment.

    To keep abreast of the issues facing the SME segment, the ATO needs to continuously monitor the segment through research.

    The 2010 Understanding the Small and Medium Enterprise market (PDF, 1.32MB) research provides the ATO with an understanding of the segment's attitudes to, and perceptions of, the ATO and tax compliance and measures their level of knowledge on specific aspects of business taxation. Where possible, the 2010 research results have been compared to the 2008 research results.
