  • Self-education expenses calculator

The Self-education expenses calculator will check your eligibility for, and give you an estimate of, the deduction you can claim at the Work-related self-education expenses question on your tax return.

    Information you will need

You will need to enter amounts for all of the eligible self-education expenses you incurred during the income year, including amounts for the decline in value of depreciating assets used for self-education purposes.

If you have decline in value amounts to claim, before you begin your self–education calculation, you can use the Depreciation and capital allowances toolThis link opens in a new window to help calculate decline in value amounts.

You cannot claim a deduction for self-education expenses for a course that:

    • relates only in a general way to your current employment or profession, or
    • will enable you to get new employment.

You cannot claim any deductions against government assistance payments, including Austudy, ABSTUDY and Youth Allowance.

All outcomes provided by this calculator are based on the information you provide at the time of calculation. You should use the outcomes as an estimate and for guidance purposes only.
