  • Trans-Tasman Retirement Savings Portability scheme

From 1 July 2013, the Trans-Tasman Retirement Savings Portability scheme makes it possible for you to transfer your retirement savings from New Zealand to Australia (or the reverse) after you migrate from one country to the other.

The transfer is voluntary for members and voluntary for funds to accept. Check with your Australian super fund to see if they are participating in the scheme.

    If you:

    • currently reside in Australia, you may only transfer retirement savings between a New Zealand KiwiSaver scheme and a complying fund regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)
    • currently reside in New Zealand and have money held in a complying APRA fund, you will need to contact your APRA fund
    • permanently emigrated to New Zealand and have ATO-held super, you may be eligible to transfer this amount to a New Zealand KiwiSaver scheme or have it directly paid to yourself
    • are a New Zealand citizen who worked in Australian and have ATO-held super, you may be eligible to transfer this amount to a New Zealand KiwiSaver scheme or have it directly paid to yourself.
