Self-managed superannuation funds: statistical overview 2016–17

A statistical overview of the self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) sector for 2016–17.

Last updated 13 May 2019

This annual overview provides key statistics and analysis of Australia's SMSF sector for 2016–17.

The main source of data is 2016–17 SMSF annual returns, which were typically due for lodgment during 2017–18. Further information for 2017–18 is also included where available, such as for registrations of new SMSFs. Where data is sourced from SMSF annual returns, 2016–17 is the latest year used.

As data in this report is based on returns that have been lodged, we use statistically valid formulas to estimate results where lodgments are outstanding. As outstanding returns are received, we continue to revise and update the data, and some figures may therefore change in future releases of this statistical overview.

Where appropriate, we refer to Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) data for comparisons between the SMSF sector and APRA-regulated funds.
