Information Publication Scheme agency plan

Outlines how we will develop and maintain our Information Publication Scheme entry.

Last updated 4 March 2021

The Australian Government Information Publication Scheme (IPS) was established as part of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). The Act requires each agency to:

  • publish a broad range of information on their website
  • make that information available in an accessible format where possible.

The ATO is an independent statutory agency within the Treasury portfolio. We operate under:

  • the Public Service Act 1999 (PS Act) and
  • the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act).

The Commissioner of Taxation is responsible for the general administration of a wide range of taxation and superannuation legislation. Under the Australian business number legislation, the Commissioner is also the Australian Business Registrar.

In 2010, we implemented amendments to the FOI Act. This includes the IPS entry, which:

  • helps strengthen our governance and organisational culture
  • furthers the principles and objects of the FOI Act
  • meets the specific legislated requirements and
  • is consistent with our value of openness and accountability.
