Paid parental leave superannuation contribution program

How this program supports the Paid Parental Leave Superannuation Contribution scheme.

Published 9 June 2026

Program overview

The Paid Parental Leave Superannuation Contribution is a government‑funded superannuation payment made on Parental Leave Pay (PLP) by Services Australia to eligible individuals from 1 July 2025.

Under this scheme, the ATO pays a super contribution – calculated at the Superannuation Guarantee rate – into the individual's nominated super fund as a lump sum after the end of the financial year in which Parental Leave Pay was received from Services Australia. The contribution includes an interest component and is intended to help reduce the long‑term superannuation gap experienced by individuals taking time out of the workforce to care for a child or children.

The Paid Parental Leave Superannuation Contribution (PPLSC) data-matching program will enable us to:

  • receive PLP data from Services Australia to enable the ATO to calculate the PPLSC payments, and
  • make the payments on an annual basis, including an interest component, from July 2026.

Program objectives

Our data matching program complements other gender equality measures and the government’s objectives to increase support for women’s economic participation, reducing the retirement savings gap for some women.

Additional objectives of the measure include:

  • boosting retirement savings for parents
  • improving the economic security of families
  • normalising parental leave as a workplace entitlement
  • modernising and strengthening the Paid Parental Leave Scheme, and
  • improving the fairness of Australia’s retirement income system.

Why we look at Parental Leave Pay data

This program will allow us to:

  • match PLP data provided by Services Australia against our records to identify eligible individuals
  • correctly calculate the PPLSC, and
  • make payment to the correct individual's super funds.
