We're authorised by the Taxation Administration Act 1953 to ask for your tax file number (TFN). We use the TFN and other information you provide in the Copies of tax documents request (NAT 75438) form to identify you or relevant entity in our records. It isn't an offence not to provide a TFN but if you don't your form may take longer to process.
Where authorised by law, we may give this information to other government departments and agencies, including:
- Services Australia
- Australian Bureau of Statistics
- Law Enforcement Agencies.
We also provide taxpayer information to treaty partners overseas under international tax agreements.
