BASAAG membership expression of interest

How to nominate for membership of the BAS Agent Advisory Group with EOI application form.

1 October 2025

Nominate to become a member of the BAS Agent Advisory Group

We are calling for expressions of interest (EOI) from BAS agents with at least 5 years' experience as a registered BAS agent to become a member of the BAS Agent Advisory Group (BASAAG).

To submit an EOI:

We expect to notify applicants in November 2025.

BASAAG membership

An important feature of the BASAAG is the diverse range of members' skills and experience. This helps the ATO understand the issues and impacts of policy and administration changes on BAS agents and their clients. We are keen to have representatives from diverse backgrounds as they provide valuable feedback from the BAS agent and taxpayer perspective.

Membership is at the discretion of the ATO co-chair who will consider a range of factors. These include the relevance of the BAS agent’s knowledge and expertise, and their potential to contribute to outcomes.

BAS agent members participate in the group in their personal capacity, not as representatives of their firm or practice. Professional association members represent the relevant professional body or industry group.

BASAAG membership expectations

BAS agent members must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board, have a minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience in the profession, and be located in Australia.

Members will actively contribute to the work of the group and abide by the ATO consultation framework. Expectations of BASAAG members include:

  • providing input on issues and processes affecting the tax profession as a whole in relation to the administration of the tax system
  • identifying emerging issues or developments that may be of concern to the BAS agent profession broadly in relation to meeting tax and superannuation obligations
  • identifying opportunities to improve the administration of the tax system
  • demonstrating integrity and engaging in good faith and in a professional and transparent manner, demonstrating a mutual respect for the expertise, contributions and role of other members
  • signing and adhering to an integrity declaration which includes an agreement to meet their personal and professional tax and superannuation obligations and demonstrate integrity
  • adhering to information sharing guidelines applied to meeting topics and maintaining confidentiality of information, including signing a confidentiality deed where required
  • disclosing any matters that could be perceived to be, or are, conflicts of interest and taking appropriate action to manage conflicts of interest.

Member names are published on ato.gov.au at BAS Agent Advisory Group.

BASAAG membership commitment

BASSAG members are appointed for 2 years. The time commitment required is one day for attendance at face-to-face or virtual BASAAG meetings up to 4 times per year, plus pre-reading. Meetings are usually held in April, June, October and December.

Face-to-face meetings are typically held in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra; however, this may vary. Short, ad-hoc meetings may be conducted outside formal meeting times where appropriate, but attendance is optional and is subject to your availability.

New members will be inducted prior to their first meeting, with members being onboarded in a staggered approach over 18 months

Members can apply for a 2-year extension after their initial 2-year term, with approval from the ATO co-chair. Members who have served 2 consecutive terms must wait 2 years before reapplying.

Payment

Members will not be paid or reimbursed by the ATO for the cost of their time spent attending meetings or attending to related issues.

Where the cost of attending meetings would be prohibitive for individual BAS agents, the ATO may meet reasonable costs for travel expenses, consistent with ATO guidelines and as agreed with the ATO co-chair.
