Tax time is in full swing and so are cyber criminals! Their aim? To steal personal information and commit fraud. High-profile breaches at major Australian enterprises demonstrates that even well-resourced organisations remain vulnerable to sophisticated cybercriminals.
Cyber Security Awareness Month is a timely reminder for businesses to check their digital defence and ensure they're building a cyber safe culture. Just like locking your front door, cyber safety should be part of your business's everyday routine.
This month we're asking businesses to talk to their employees about how they can protect their personal information by:
- Setting up myID – it’s your digital armour when accessing ATO online services through myGov. Set it up to the highest identity strength you can. The higher the strength, the more protected you are.
- Downloading the ATO app – manage tax and super easily while receiving real-time alerts when changes are made to your account. If something doesn’t look right, you can lock your account instantly and follow the prompts to secure it.
To protect from cyber threats, adopt these 3 simple cyber safety habits:
- Keep your devices updated. Regular software updates help defend against threats.
- Use strong, unique passphrases. Combine 4 or more random words like 'ocean lamp tiger cloud' and add special characters or numbers for extra strength. Avoid quotes, personal details or predictable phrases.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA). It adds an extra layer of protection by requiring 2 or more forms of ID – like a passphrase and your biometrics making it much harder for intruders to gain access.
