Australian Government drives eInvoicing by default

The Australian Government is taking the next step in its commitment to make eInvoicing the default way agencies exchange invoice information with suppliers.

Transitional arrangements have been in place since March 2025, supporting non-corporate Commonwealth entities (NCEs) as government policies, guidance and processes are updated to embed eInvoicing across Commonwealth procurement.

The ATO, as Australia's Peppol Authority, is supporting agencies through the transition.

Changes to payment terms

From 1 January 2027, changes to the Department of Finance's Supplier Pay On-Time or Pay Interest Policy (RMG 417)External Link will introduce:

  • standard payment terms of 10 business days
  • eInvoicing as the default method of invoicing for Australian Government procurement.

Commonwealth Contracting Suite documentation and guidance for suppliers about getting paidExternal Link will soon reflect these changes.

The changes are designed to simplify invoicing, support faster payments and deliver a more efficient experience for suppliers and government agencies.

Australia's 6 million eInvoices and counting

Australia has hit a major eInvoicing milestone, with more than 6 million eInvoices now exchanged across the national network.

While it is impossible to pinpoint the exact invoice or the exact day, somewhere in early August 2026 an Australian business hit 'send' on the country's 6–millionth eInvoice, marking another step forward in the digital transformation of invoicing and payments.

The achievement highlights how far eInvoicing has come since its introduction in Australia. Despite a challenging start, including the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic shortly after the Australian Peppol Authority was established in late 2019, adoption has continued to grow steadily.

Today, the network is processing more than 250,000 eInvoices every month, with over 430,000 ABNs registered and ready to receive eInvoices.

Peppol adoption surges as EU drives growth

The global Peppol network is experiencing unprecedented growth, with the number of registered businesses increasing by nearly 80% in the first 3 months of the 2026–27 financial year.

Much of this growth is being driven by recent business-to-business eInvoicing requirements across Europe, particularly in France and Belgium. As further requirements are rolled out under the European Union's VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA)External Link initiative, the network's reach will continue to grow.

More than 7 million businesses are now registered on the Peppol network worldwide, cementing its position as a leading framework for secure, standardised digital trade.

Growth is also accelerating closer to home. New Zealand has now passed 110,000 registered businesses on the network and recently celebrated its one-millionth eInvoice.

Australia continues to play a significant role in the global Peppol community, with more than 430,000 businesses registered to receive eInvoices. The majority are small businesses, many of which can send and receive eInvoices directly through the accounting or business software they already use.

Payment redirections scams costing us more

Payment redirection and false billing scams are continuing to cost Australian businesses millions of dollars, according to the latest insights from the National Anti-Scam Centre.

More than $166 million was lost to these scams in 2025, up 9.3% from $152 million in 2024. The figures highlight the growing impact of invoice fraud, where scammers impersonate trusted businesses and redirect payments to fraudulent bank accounts.

One of the benefits of eInvoicing is the protection its secure Peppol network provides – the more eInvoicing is used the safer all Australian businesses will be.

Strengthening Peppol network security

New security requirements are being introduced across the global Peppol network, reinforcing trust and confidence in the exchange of eInvoices.

Under the new requirements, all accredited Peppol service providers worldwide will need to hold a valid ISO/IEC 27001 certification, or an approved equivalent, by 1 October 2027.

The change reflects the growing scale of the Peppol network and will help service providers maintain robust information security practices as adoption continues to increase globally.

Peppol service providers should review the implementation requirements and timeframes to ensure they are prepared for the transition.

For more information on the new requirements, including scope, documentation requirements and key deadlines, read the OpenPeppol ISO/IEC 27001 Implementation planExternal Link.
