A word from Tom Wheeler - November 2025

Assistant Commissioner Tom Wheeler recommends self-assessing NFPs act now and lodge any overdue NFP self-review returns.

Last updated 5 November 2025

After joining the team last month, a highlight was the launch of our Vulnerability Framework. Like many NFPs who assist those in need in our community, the ATO supports people that experience vulnerability. Take a moment to review our principle-based guide and see how we're working toward developing more inclusive and consistent community interactions. Thank you to the NFPs who generously contributed during public consultation - your insights helped shape the final framework.

Similarly, the ATO continues to improve the support available for NFPs who face difficulties in meeting their tax and registry obligations, whether it be updating your registration details or making a lodgment online, via phone or through a registered tax agent. We've published guides, factsheets and videos to walk you through the process.

Act now and lodge

In the weeks leading up to 31 October, I was pleased to see the highest rate of NFPs lodging a self-review return since it was introduced. As the lodgment deadline for the 2024–25 return has now passed, if your organisation has an active ABN, self-assesses as income tax exempt and still needs to lodge, act now! NFPs that intentionally avoid lodging may have penalties applied and repeated non-lodgment could result in a review of their income tax exemption status. Learn more at What happens if you lodge the NFP self-review return late.

We understand that many NFPs are actively taking steps to meet their obligations. Actions like updating your ABN details or setting up access to Online Services demonstrates to us you're on the right track. If you’ve submitted a Notifying us of changes to your not-for-profit - please be patient as it can take a while to process.

Keep informed

Payday Super legislation has recently passed through both houses of parliament, which is a critical milestone. We’re now waiting on Royal Assent. Find out more about the changes and how your NFP can prepare at Payday Super changes.

We'd like to hear from you. Our NFP news survey is open now and it's your chance to help shape future editions of this newsletter. Whether you’re a volunteer, employee, leader or tax professional, your feedback will help us improve our monthly updates. The survey only takes 2–3 minutes to complete and your responses are anonymous.

Thank you for continuing to engage with us on the issues important to you. See how we're progressing on our key priorities and check out how we performed over the past year in our 2024–25 Annual Report. Remember, continuing to maintain the health of your NFP today will position your organisation to deliver on the needs of the community into the future.

Warm regards

Tom
