Ayla's story

Ayla, a young female Evergreen Program graduate, standing smiling in an ATO office in front of an Indigenous artwork on the wall, wearing a black top and trousers.

After working in a supermarket for over 20 years, I was looking for a career change, something that reignited my passion for work. I didn't see any progression or appreciation for the work that I was doing or the knowledge that I had. I was looking for somewhere that would foster growth. I found that at the ATO.

It was scary stepping away from something so familiar, but the Evergreen Program gave me the tools and support to make the leap. Everyone here is open to ideas and committed to improvement. I’ve felt welcomed, heard, and supported from day one. I've learned that I'm far more capable than I give myself credit for. I feel that I am where I'm meant to be.

I can see that no matter which way I want to take my career, there is an avenue for that here at the ATO. I haven't even scratched the surface of what the ATO has to offer, I'm excited to see where it can lead.

Sandra's story

Sandra, a female ATO Evergeen Program graduate, smiling, seated at a desk working on a laptop in an ATO office, wearing an Indigenous print blouse, with Indigenous artwork on the wall.

I was nervous to apply because I’m older and I hadn’t worked in government before. I came from a community organisation where the work was intense and emotionally heavy. My daughter, who works at the ATO, encouraged me to apply. She said, 'Mum, when you clock off here, you really clock off’. That idea of having time for my family again really spoke to me.

The Evergreen Program gave me that balance. I’m no longer getting calls at midnight. I feel culturally supported, and I’ve found my community again through the Moondani network and new friends. We leaned on each other, especially during those early moments of imposter syndrome. Now, I look back and laugh at the panic. I know I can push through and succeed.

Since completing the program, I’ve grown so much. I’ve taken on new roles, built my brand, and even emceed a National Reconciliation Week event. I feel empowered. I know I’m resilient, and I know I belong here.

If you’re thinking about applying, just give it a go. You’ll be supported every step of the way, and you might just discover how strong and capable you really are.

Jack's story

Jack, a young male ATO Evergreen Program graduate, smiling, seated in an ATO workspace, wearing a white shirt and black trousers.

After finishing high school, I wasn’t keen on going to uni. I was working casually at Coles and didn’t really know what my future looked like. My parents encouraged me to look into public service jobs, and that’s when I found the ATO’s Evergreen Program. I applied because I thought it could be a great stepping stone and I’d get a Certificate IV.

I was nervous at first, but the program gave me structure, support, and a clear path forward. The permanent role and work/life balance were huge for me. I’ve learned how to work in a team, write professional emails, and build networks. I'd never imagined doing these things before.

The most rewarding part was completing my Certificate IV. It gave me a real sense of achievement and confidence. Now I feel like I belong here. I’m excited to keep learning and eventually move up in the organisation.

If you’re unsure about what’s next after school, I’d say definitely apply. The Evergreen Program gives you skills, support, and options. It’s a solid foundation for whatever comes next.
