Impact of EOY shutdown on new SMSF registrants

The ATO end-of-year (EOY) shutdown may cause delays for new SMSF new registrants.

Last updated 14 November 2025

If you're planning on registering a new self-managed super fund (SMSF), please be aware of our upcoming end-of-year shutdown period:

  • Shutdown begins: 12:00 pm (AEDT), Wednesday 24 December 2025.
  • Reopen: 8:30 am (AEDT), Friday 2 January 2026.

During this time, ATO services – including SMSF registration processing, correspondence, and support will be temporarily unavailable. However, you can still submit applications over this period.

What this means for you

To avoid delays in the processing of your SMSF registration or related queries, we strongly recommend submitting any outstanding documentation or requests well before mid-December. Each year, we experience a significant backlog around this period, which can lead to slower turnaround times and increased complaints.

Tips to help you prepare:

  • ensure all required registration documents are submitted early
  • inform trustees about potential delays
  • avoid planning key fund activities during the shutdown period.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to minimise disruptions and ensure a smooth start to the new year for all SMSF registrants.
