What to do if you get a data matching letter about needing to include rental income in your tax return.

Published 8 October 2025

Receiving your letter

We may send you a letter if our data suggests you have rental income that hasn't been reported in your tax return.

We collect data from third parties, including:

  • financial institutions
  • property managers
  • land title offices
  • sharing economy platforms
  • bond authorities
  • insurers.

What you need to do

If you receive one of these letters, it means you should check your records to confirm whether you have included all rental income received from the properties stated in the letter.

If all income has been correctly reported for the years indicated, you don’t need to reply to the letter.

If you need to amend your tax return

You can amend past tax returns by:

  • asking your registered tax agent to lodge the amendment on your behalf
  • using our online services through myGov and include all rental income.
