The ATO is reminding non-charitable not-for-profits (NFPs) with an active Australian business number (ABN) to lodge their annual self-review return to notify of their eligibility to self-assess as income tax exempt.
Assistant Commissioner Jennifer Moltisanti speaks to the NFP self-review return in the media grabs. More information about the self-review return is available in the media releases: 31 March lodgment deadline approaches for over 100,000 not-for-profits and ATO encourages NFPs to get ready for new return.
Media grab 1: If you run a non-charitable not-for-profit, such as a sporting club or community service organisation, you are required to lodge a self-review return with the ATO to confirm your eligibility to self-assess as income tax exempt. You can lodge it online, over the phone using our self-help phone service on 13 72 26, or through your registered tax agent. Visit ato.gov.au/NFPtaxexempt to find out more.
Media grab 2: Non-charitable not-for-profits with an active ABN are required to lodge a self-review return with the ATO to confirm their income tax exemption status. The deadline is fast approaching. There’s a common myth that not-for-profits are automatically exempt from income tax, however income tax exemption for not-for-profits is not an automatic entitlement and not all qualify. Find out more at ato.gov.au/NFPtaxexempt.
Media grab 3: If you’re a not-for-profit and you’ve been putting off lodging your self-review return with the ATO, now is the time to act! With the deadline fast approaching, we’re here to help not-for-profits understand and prepare for lodging their return. Support is available through our dedicated hotline on 1300 13 248 or at ato.gov.au/NFPtaxexempt.
