This privacy notice relates to the collection of personal information when making an application to defer or amend your study or training loan repayments.

To request the information and documents detailed in our application form or letters we send you, we are authorised by:

  • the Higher Education Funding Act 1988
  • the Higher Education Support Act 2003
  • the VET Student Loans Act 2016
  • the Student Assistance Act 1973
  • the Social Security Act 1991
  • the Trade Support Loans Act 2014
  • the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 (ITAA 1936)
  • the Tax Administration Act 1953 (TAA 1953)
  • the Tax Assessment Act 1997 (ITAA 1997).

We need this information to help us administer taxation laws, which will allow us to make a fair and just decision relating to your deferment or amendment application.

Where authorised by law, we may give this information to other government departments and agencies, including:

  • Department of Education, Skills and Employment
  • Services Australia
  • Department of Social Services
  • Department of Home Affairs
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics
  • Reserve Bank of Australia.

We also provide taxpayer information to treaty partners overseas under international tax agreements.

If you have an Australian Business Number (ABN), some information on this form may be collected under the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number Act) 1999 and will be used to update your details on the Australian Business Register (ABR). Where authorised by law, selected information may be made publicly available and some may be passed to a wide range of government agencies, including Commonwealth, state and local government agencies.
