  • Registration

If you're starting a new business you may need an Australian business number (ABN). Not everyone is entitled to an ABNExternal Link, so the registration process will ask specific questions to determine your entitlement to an ABN.

Once you have your ABN, you can use it to connect to your myGov account so you can deal with us online. Alternatively you can apply for an AUSkey to interact with us through the Business Portal.

Depending on the nature of your business, you may also need to register for GST and other tax obligations.

You can register for your ABN, AUSkey and tax roles at one time, as well as register your business name, through the Australian Business Register (ABR).

Once you're set up, you may need to:

    • add or cancel a registration – for example, if you start employing people you need to register for pay as you go (PAYG) withholding
    • change your business details – for example, if you change your address or authorised contact person. It is a legal requirement to tell us within 28 days so we can update the ABR and pass on the changes to other government agencies.
    • cancel your ABN and other tax registrations if you cease business.

We are working with other government agencies to streamline business registration. You can find out more about these initiatives at – streamlining business registrationExternal Link.
