We’ve published our latest annual Report of data about research and development tax incentive entities. It contains specific data about R&D entities that claimed the incentive for the 2022–23 income year. By providing transparency of R&D expenditure, the report aims to improve public accountability and voluntary compliance.
The report is made up of 2 parts:
- the data published on data.gov.auExternal Link
- an analysis of the data published on our website at R&D tax transparency reports, along with general information about the purpose of the report and how the data was sourced.
What’s in the report
This report found that 12,956 companies invested $16.2 billion in R&D in 2022–23. These companies included:
- 6,016 (46%) small business entities with an annual turnover of less than $10 million
- 4,507 (35%) privately owned and wealthy group entities that are not publicly listed or foreign-owned, with an annual turnover of more than $10 million
- 2,428 (19%) public and multinational entities that are publicly listed and multinational companies.
The legislation provides for a 2-year delay between the R&D claim and our disclosure. The delay in publishing this information is designed to address any perceived commercial sensitivity of the data.
If you have amended your expenditure, the published data includes both the original amount, and the amended total R&D expenses amounts. However, we're unable to publish any adjustments made by the Commissioner, if this has occurred the report will only include the original amount.
