Six simple steps to safeguard your office during your break

Stay cyber-safe this festive season: secure files, sign out, update software, and back up your business data.

Last updated 16 December 2025

Before you sign off for the holidays, give your business an early present by taking these 6 steps to safeguard your business and client information:

  1. Lock up or securely dispose of all physical files. Thieves can take a few quick photos that can compromise sensitive client details. Use locked storage or shred documents you no longer need.
  2. Keep laptops, tablets, and phones out of sight and secure.
  3. Sign out of all accounts and devices. Leaving sessions open makes them vulnerable.
  4. Update your software. Outdated systems are easy targets for cyber criminals. Turn on automatic updates to take the guesswork out of updating work devices.
  5. Back up your files and devices regularly on a physical device (such as an external hard drive) or in the cloud. This is helpful if your data becomes damaged, lost, stolen or infected by malware.
  6. Remove user permissions for staff who have left or no longer require system use. This includes access to shared accounts. Unauthorised access to systems by past employees is a common cause of identity security or fraud issues for businesses.
