  • Private health insurance rebate calculator

The Private health insurance rebate calculator will use your estimated income for surcharge purposes for the current income year to help you work out:

    • your entitlement to the private health insurance rebate
    • the rebate percentage that you can claim.

The private health insurance rebate is an amount the government contributes towards the cost of your private hospital health insurance premiums.

This rebate is income tested which means your eligibility to receive it depends on your income. If you have a higher income, your rebate entitlement may be reduced, or you may not be entitled to any rebate at all.

The rebate can be claimed for premiums paid for a private health insurance policy that provides private patient hospital cover, general cover (commonly known as extras), or combined hospital and general cover. The government does not give this rebate on the lifetime health cover loading component of a policy.

The rebate percentage is adjusted on 1 April each year by a Rebate Adjustment Factor. For 2020, the Rebate Adjustment Factor is 1, which means the rebate percentages will not change for the period 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021.

You can claim the private health insurance rebate as a reduction in the amount of private health insurance premiums you pay to your insurer. Alternatively, we will calculate your private health insurance rebate when you lodge your tax return. This rebate is a refundable tax offset.

It is now optional for registered health insurers to provide you with a private health insurance statement. A statement will only be provided if you request one from your registered health insurer.

If you were covered as a dependent child on a family policy, use the information shown on the statement for that policy.

See Private health insurance rebate for more information.

The calculator results are based on the information you provide at the time of calculation.

If your circumstances change during the current income year, your private health insurance rebate percentage may also change.
