Types of letters

We issue different types of data-matching letters depending on the type of discrepancy we find. This section describes the letters we send and the schedules accompanying them.

The type of data-matching letter you receive depends on the discrepancy we find between the details on your tax return and data reported to us by employers, financial institutions, companies, health funds and government agencies.

Generally, when we send a data-matching letter, it will relate to a tax return lodged more than a year ago. We can only issue letters after we receive all relevant information from other organisations. Delays can occur as some organisations may take longer to report.

Each letter we issue will clearly show the financial year to which it relates.

It will also include a schedule showing information from your tax return, the relevant data we hold and the discrepancy.
