Easiest ways to pay

The easiest and most secure ways to pay are with BPAY® or through our online services. For a full list of payment options, see How to pay .

Pay with BPAY

To pay with BPAY you will need:

  • our Biller code which is 75556
  • your reference number for the payment. This is your unique payment reference number (PRN).

To pay with BPAY, you will need to log into your online banking and select pay with BPAY.

You can also contact your bank or financial institution directly. They can help you make this payment with BPAY from your Australian account.

Pay with online services

You can make a secure payment through our online services.

Other payment options

We offer several other payment options so you can find a method that suits you.

Whichever payment method you use, you will need to use the correct unique PRN in the reference field for each payment.

Payment reference number

Your unique PRN ensures your payment is credited to the correct account. A PRN may also be called an EFT code (for electronic funds transfer code).

You will have a different PRN for different types of tax, for example, a specific PRN for income tax and a specific PRN for activity statements. Make sure you use the right PRN for the type of tax you're paying.

Using an incorrect PRN could result in:

  • delays to payments being credited to your account
  • unnecessary debt collection activity.

You can use our online services to get your PRN or you can:

  • look at your ATO notices or payment slips
  • ask your registered tax professional
  • contact us during operating hours.

Support options

You need to lodge and pay your tax bills in full and on time to avoid penalties, general interest charges (GIC) and firmer actions. However, if you’re experiencing financial difficulties there is a range of support available, which includes payment plans.

If you need additional support, contact us or your tax professional:

  • before your tax bill is due
  • as early as you can if you have an existing tax debt.

If you would like to speak to us in a language other than English, phone the Translating and Interpreting service (TIS National) on +61 3 9268 8332 and request to be connected to the ATO in the language you wish to speak in.

Payment plans

What is a payment plan?

A payment plan allows you to break down your payment into smaller amounts that are made by instalments. This means you pay an agreed sum of money – either weekly, fortnightly or monthly – until the account balance is cleared.

Tax debts on a payment plan continue to accrue general interest charges (GIC), which compound daily. Paying your debt in the shortest period of time will help reduce the GIC that you’ll pay.

Setting up a payment plan

Before you set up a payment plan you should consider if you can pay your debt in full and how much you can afford to pay in each instalment.

There are a few ways to set up a payment plan. You can:

  • use ATO online services
  • phone our self-help phone service
  • speak to us during operating hours.

Your registered tax or BAS agent may also be able to set a payment plan up on your behalf.
