Checking for lost or unclaimed super

Your clients may have lost track of super if they changed their personal details, such as name, address or employer.

Lost super is when a fund has reported that they have lost touch with a member or the member’s account is inactive. In this case the super money is still held by the fund.

Unclaimed super money (USM) is when a fund has reported and paid the lost super to us.

All super accounts (including unclaimed super money) that have been successfully reported and matched to our client records are displayed on ATO online services.

View them by using the following steps:

If your client believes they have lost or unclaimed super and it’s not displaying, see

Check for lost super

If your client’s account has 'Contact fund' next to a super fund name, the fund has reported their account as lost.

If they want to keep their super with the same fund, your client will need to contact the fund directly to update their contact details.

They may also choose to transfer the balance to another fund.

If they do not act soon, it may be paid to the ATO as unclaimed super money.

Check for unclaimed super money

Unclaimed super money will display as ‘ATO held super’. The balance may also include other categories of money we have been unable to pay out directly.

You will be able to select the drop-down arrow at the end of the row next to the ATO-held super amount to see what category it is.

Select the Help function on the right to read ‘How can my client see and manage their lost or unclaimed super?’.
