  • Update your name

    There are several ways you can update your name:

    Online

    Using our online services for individuals is the quickest way to update your name.

    You will need a myGovExternal Link account linked to the ATO and at least one of the following identification documents:

    • Australian full birth certificate – not an extract
    • Australian marriage certificate
    • Australian change of name certificate.

    The document details you provide will be verified with the relevant agency.

    How to update your name online

    To update your name online:

    • Sign in to your myGov account and choose Australian Taxation Office under Your services. This will take you to the ATO online home page.
    • From the top menu, select My profile, then Personal details.
    • Select Update name and title from below your name.
    • Select if you are updating a previous name or updating a new name.
    • Select the identification document you will be using to verify your name change.
    • Tick the box to agree to your identity document being checked with the issuing agency. Select Next.
    • Select the state or territory of issue, complete the fields provided for the identity document you are using. Select Next.

    By phone

    We can update your name over the phone if you have the right documents. Phone us on 13 28 65 to speak to a customer service representative.

    You’ll need at least one of the following identification documents that can be checked over the phone:

    • Australian full birth certificate – not an extract
    • Australian marriage certificate
    • Australian change of name certificate.

    We'll check your documents with the relevant agencies. If we can't make the changes over the phone, we'll give you other options.

    By post

    Download and fill out the form Change of details for individuals and post it to the address on the form.

    Include a certified copy of your original identification document. Documents you mail to us may not be returned to you so don't post originals.

    These documents must not be changed in any way. It can take up to 28 days to update your records after we receive the form.

    Foreign residents

    Foreign residents who don't have an Australian identification document can supply a certified copy of a:

    • foreign passport
    • foreign birth certificate
    • national photo identification card
    • foreign government-issued identification
    • foreign marriage certificate
    • foreign driver licence.
