What you need to know about the member verification request

Learn how the member verification request (MVR) will improve the way your SMSF receives super contributions.

Published 15 May 2026

The MVR is a key part of the SuperStream upgrades to support faster payments, clearer error messaging and higher contribution volumes.

The MVR allows an employer, through their payroll or clearing house, to check whether a fund can accept a contribution before the first payment is made. The MVR confirms employee and fund details match to an active account and that the fund can receive a contribution.

This change is particularly important for your self-managed super fund (SMSF) if you receive contributions from unrelated employers.

From 1 July, your SMSF must be able to respond to an MVR within 24 hours.
Make sure:

  • your electronic service address (ESA) is active and correctly maintained
  • fund and member details are up to date
  • your messaging provider or administrator is ready for SuperStream changes.

If your SMSF cannot be verified through an MVR, the employer will receive an error and may be unable to make the contribution. This can delay payments and may expose employers to compliance issues. In some cases, employers may choose to pay super to a default fund to avoid potential penalties.

With Payday Super, issues need to be resolved earlier and quicker. Checking that your SMSF is ready to respond to MVRs now will help ensure contributions can be received smoothly.
