Chris – Tax Specialist International Risk and Intel

'There's variety in the work and it's given me an amazing opportunity to combine my understanding of international tax issues with my ability to deliver solutions that create value from data. My work has helped to expand our understanding of our clients and creates insights into potential risks for the Tax Avoidance Taskforce.

I contribute to initiatives that are embedding data and analytics in the ATO's risk management processes. I research and report on patterns and trends in datasets, and I work on the design and build of new international risk modelling and other data analysis tools. Best of all, I've become part of a large data analytics community in the ATO, sharing developments and progress with other data professionals, business analysts, and risk and intelligence officer from across the organisation.'

Merinda – Tax Specialist Director International Tax Structuring

'Since joining the ATO, I haven’t looked back! After many years at PwC, in Australia and overseas, it was time for a change, so I joined the ATO.

There are many reasons why I love working at the ATO. I work on complex and interesting cases which keep me on my toes. Being involved in work that will impact a huge number of taxpayers is also extremely rewarding.

As a Tax Specialist, I am trusted to identify risks and devise strategies for prevention and detection, giving me the ability to influence decisions and outcomes.

Access to flexible working arrangements was also a strong drawcard for me. My partner and I regularly travel between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast (where his business is based), so having a work from home agreement and flexibility of working hours has helped us achieve work-life balance.

If you want to grow your career while doing challenging and meaningful work in a supportive organisation with one of the highest employee satisfaction rates across the APS, apply today!'

Bella – EL1 Law Interpretation Specialist

'I joined the ATO two years ago after several years in one of the Big 4. It was the best career decision I have made because it accelerated my technical development and exposed me to a much more diverse range of matters. Working at the coal face of tax administration has exposed me to complex and high-profile arrangements, fascinating tax issues and immensely improved my writing skills. My day-to-day job is like piecing together a puzzle: slowly building up a picture of facts, identifying risks and applying the law. I get to do this with some of the brightest lawyers with tax investigative minds in the world. I have also learnt some new skills: forensic accounting knowledge, an understanding of litigation strategy and project management.

Working at the ATO allows for flexibility – I have used this to undertake postgraduate study at Oxford whilst still working full time. I use learnings from my studies every day at work and use my knowledge of the Australian tax system in my degree. This opportunity to combine work and study has challenged me but has made me a better tax lawyer and adviser. The work we do has a tangible impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of our tax system, and I am very proud to be part of it. Strongly consider applying to the ATO if you want to level-up capabilities, be surrounded by brilliant people and have excellent job.'
